We recently had the opportunity to chat with Amanda Schaefer and Kathy Stranks to discuss The Udder Tournament, a charity initiative they have been successfully running for five years now. Check out what they had to say below, it's a great cause!
How long have you been running this tournament for?
The Udder Tournament began in 2012, and our 6th one is taking place November 10-12, 2017!
Can you describe the charity you donate to?
The tournament is entirely non-profit. Each year we share all proceeds between a scholarship and another community initiative. The tournament began to celebrate one of our founding members who passed away from brain cancer. Her name was Donna, and the scholarship was established in her name to recognize female athletes pursuing post-secondary school, who exhibit similar traits to Donna - sportsmanship, friendly competition and having fun! Last year, the other portion of proceeds went towards the Bethell Hospice Foundation, an end of life facility, raising $1 million per year to keep its doors open and provide all services and programs at no cost to anyone who needs them.
How much money did you raise last year?
Last year we raised $33,669 for a record-breaking year. This brought us to a grand total of over $110,000 throughout the five years.
What is the highlight of the tournament?
We are most grateful and impressed by our volunteers that come out annually to help make the weekend a success! Last year we had 75 volunteers, instrumental in operating the hospitality room raffle, silent auction, bar, preparing and serving delicious food, selling Udder gear, and working registration and the clocks in the rink - just to name a few of their jobs.
Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Interested in joining us this year? Typically we have 24 women's teams enter the tournament, and last year we opened it up to 28 teams. There are four different divisions where teams are matched with others similar in age/caliber. We even have a division for women learning hockey or coming out for fun.
