CARHA Hockey World Cup FAQs

Q1: What are the age categories offered for the CARHA Hockey World Cup?
A: Provided there are four (4) teams of equal caliber (see Q2) registered for the same age category, CARHA Hockey will create a division based on the standard tournament format. For example, rec / open (19+), 30+, 35+, 40+, etc.

Q2: How does CARHA Hockey determine the team's caliber?
A: CARHA Hockey will continue to use its proven Team Profile Form, which determines the players' hockey experience while taking into consideration the age of the player. This team "rating" factor will be used along with CARHA's history on the team such as calls to the league where the team currently plays and / or tournaments where the team has recently participated in.

Q3: What is the age requirement to play in a specific division?
A: CARHA Hockey Tournament rules state that all players participating must be the designated tournament age or turn the designated age by the end of the same calendar year. At the request of the Tournament Committee, participants must show proof of age.

Q4: Do goalies have to be the same age as their division?
Goalies must be at least the age of their designated division for all divisions except for those 40+ and up. For these divisions goalies are permitted to be five (5) years younger than their designated age division. For example, for the 40+ division goalies can be as young as 35 years old as of the year of the tournament.

Q5: How many games is each team guaranteed?
A: Each team will be guaranteed three (3) games of 2-20 minute stop time periods plus the opportunity to advance to the playoffs.

Q6: Do we have to play hockey on each day?
A: No. The CARHA Hockey World Cup allows teams to enjoy the on-ice hockey experience by spreading the 3 scheduled games over the course of the week, enabling them to take in the many attractions and sites of Quebec.

Q7: Do we have to come for seven days?
A: Yes. Due to the complexity of a tournament schedule that will involve over 230 games of hockey and with the number of teams submitting special schedule requests, we require all teams to be available to play over the weeklong event.

Q8: Can an attending team choose their own hotel accommodations?
A: No. As CARHA Hockey has set out to provide an enjoyable and hassle free experience for all traveling teams, we negotiate competitive hotel rates based on the total number of rooms required for the event. As the Association has signs contracts to guarantee these rooms, we in turn require all traveling teams to reserve their accommodations through CARHA Hockey and to stay at the official event hotels. Q9: Does the hotel package include daily meals?
No. Prices do not include meals other than those specified in the hotel package (i.e. Opening Meet and Greet Reception, Closing Dinner Dance Gala)

Q9: Does the hotel package include transportation?
A: Yes. The hotel package includes team pick up and drop off shuttle service to and from the airport and for each of your team's scheduled games.

Q10: Will CARHA Hockey provide assistance with coordinating air travel?
A: Although CARHA Hockey is not responsible for organizing flights, we will lend our assistance to you in coordinating your travel plans. Please contact CARHA Hockey with written request for assistance and we will obtain air fare rates through our travel contacts.

Q11: Do family and friends pay the same as players?
A: The Hotel Package is the same for players, friends and/or family members. The package includes the same offerings for all participants we have elected to charge the same rate for all who attend. Those teams that have attended tournaments where non-playing attendees have been extended a different rate for their stay usually have the tournament team entry fee and divisional prizes included in the player's package.

The only exceptions for the Hotel Package is for those guests under the age of 18. Guests under the age of 18 who are staying in the same room as their parents, stay free.

Q12: Are there any planned or scheduled off-ice activities?
A: CARHA Hockey strives to provide exciting optional off-ice activities. Although these activities are available to all teams attending, we also want you to have "free time" to enjoy and explore all the Host City has to offer.

Q13: Does a team have to qualify to participate in the CARHA Hockey World Cup?
A: No. Teams do not have to qualify to play in the CARHA Hockey World Cup. The only requirement is that all Canadian teams must be CARHA Hockey members during the year (hockey season) of the event.

Q14: Can a player play on two different teams in the CARHA Hockey World Cup tournament?
A: No. A player will only be allowed to play for one team in the tournament.

Q15: Are transfers included in the Hotel Package?
A: Yes. Transfers include: to and from the airport as well as transfers to and from the arena and hotel for your games are included in the Hotel Package. All other travel requirements (Opening Meet and Greet Reception, Closing Dinner Dance Gala) are available at an additional cost.

Q16: While in Canada, how much can I expect to spend on breakfast, lunch and dinner?
A: The following price ranges are estimates only for dining out and are dependent on location:
Breakfast: $10.00 to $15.00
Lunch: $15.00 to $25.00
Dinner: $25.00 to $40.00

Q17: Is it required for players participating in the CARHA Hockey World Cup Tournament to wear a neck and face protector?
A: Although it is not necessary to use neck and / or face protectors, CARHA Hockey highly recommends that they are used.

Q18: Are the teams from the local area expected to play any of their games during the day throughout the week?
A: Yes. Local teams should be prepared to play one morning game (between 7:00am and 12:00pm), one afternoon game (between 1:00pm and 5:00pm) and one evening game (between 6:00pm and midnight).

Q19: Are there any specifications for goalie masks?
A: All goalie masks and helmets have to be CSA approved if you are a Canadian citizen playing on a Canadian team in the CARHA Hockey World Cup. The old style "cat eyes" is not CSA approved and will not be allowed in the event. There are some modern cat eyes that are now CSA approved.
There is no waiver to sign that allows play with an illegal piece of equipment. There is no exception to the rule.

Q20: What size are the Hotel room beds?
A: The double bed is 54 x 80 (inches). The queen bed is 60 x 80 (inches). The king bed is 76 x 80 (inches).

Q23: Do we need to be members of CARHA Hockey?
A: Yes. All registered team are required to be members of CARHA Hockey. Please visit the CARHA Hockey website for more team membership details.

Q24: How can I find out how many other teams are registered in the tournament and where they are from?
A: CARHA Hockey will post a complete list of registered teams and their home countries on our website.

Q25: How many teams will there be in each division?
A: The number of teams per division will depend on how many teams have registered in each respective age/skill category.

Q26: What is the maximum number of players you can have on a team?
A: There is space on your roster for eighteen (18) players. Additions over and above the maximum number must be approved by CARHA Hockey in advance of the tournament start date.

Q27: Can we apply the CARHA Hockey Logo and/or CARHA Hockey World Cup logo on our Jersey, Hockey Pants or any other clothing?
A: No. The CARHA Hockey logo and CARHA Hockey World Cup logo are registered trademarks of CARHA Hockey and as such it is not permissible for them to be reproduced.

Q28: Can I register as an individual player if I don’t have a full team that can enter the tournament? If so, how do I register?
A: Individual players whom are interested to enter the tournament can complete the CARHA Hockey World Cup Spare Form and submit it to CARHA Hockey.

Q29: We want to stay with relatives at the tournament? Is this possible?
A: No. The CARHA Hockey World Cup rules state that all traveling teams (1 ½ hour drive or more outside of the Host City) are required to stay in the selected event hotels, with NO exceptions.

Q30: How many games are we guaranteed for the week? Can we choose when we want our games to be?
A: Each team will be guaranteed three (3) games for the week. These games will be randomly scheduled therefore you should be prepared to be available to play anytime (day or evening).

Q31: What division do we register to if our players ages ranges across various age divisions?
A: Your team’s division will depend on the age of your youngest player. Please see the Tournament Information for further details.

Q32: Does each team have to bring two different coloured Jerseys?
A: Participating teams are not required to bring two (2) different colours of jerseys. If two teams are wearing the same colour, CARHA Hockey will provide bibs for the duration of the game. Those teams with two sets of jersey are welcome to bring them.

Q33: Is bodily contact permitted in the tournament?
A: There will be NO body contact permitted in the tournament. Failure to follow these rules will result in the appropriate penalties and disciplinary measures.

Q34: Are slap shots permitted in the tournament?
A: There will be no slap shots allowed in the traditional Oldtimers divisions (e.g. 35+, 40+, 45+…etc). Slap shots may be permissible in the non-traditional Oldtimers divisions (e.g. 19+, 25+, 30+…etc).

Q35: Can individual team members stay at different event hotels?
A: Teams will be expected to stay together in the same hotel. Teams will be assigned to their hotel on a first come first serve basis, based on the receipt of the team’s Confirmed Hotel Rooming List and the availability in each hotel.

Q36: Can National Hockey League (NHL) players or professional players participate in the tournament?
A: Any players who are playing at the professional level at the time of the CARHA Hockey World Cup tournament will not be permitted to participate in the tournament.

Q37: If a team wishes to come a few days before the tournament or would like to stay for a few days after the tournament, how do they book these rooms?  A: All hotel bookings must be done through CARHA Hockey. Therefore, if you are arriving a few days early or are staying on a few days after the conclusion of the tournament, please let us know so that we can ensure your team does not have to move from hotel to hotel during your stay.
