The Smith Falls Women's Ball Hockey League is CARHA Hockey's largest ball hockey league. We chatted with Shannon Fontaine, League Coordinator, to learn more!

Can you tell us a little about the Smith Falls Women’s Ball Hockey League and your involvement?

The Smiths Falls Women’s Ball Hockey League began 8 years ago. A few of us were driving from Smiths Falls to Carp to play ball hockey. That was great, but I thought why doesn’t Smiths Falls have a league, we have two arenas. We got together to brainstorm and we decided to try and start a league. Our first season, we had 12 teams and approximately 180 players. We were thrilled! We have 10 teams now, and new players joining every season. The league is for women 18+ and runs from April until August.

What is your background in sports?

Growing up I didn’t play hockey. My first ball hockey game was in Almonte 12 years ago. My co-worker convinced me to try ball hockey and I absolutely loved it. A few years later, I tried ice hockey for the first time and enjoyed that as well.

What makes ball hockey unique?

Ball hockey is unique because it is a sport for everyone, no matter your fitness level, skill or background in sports.

Looking at a past roster, there are very creative team names! Do you have a favourite?

My favourite team name would be Dolls with Balls of course!

Do you have advice for someone who is looking to get involved in the game?

My advice to anyone looking to get involved in the game would be to find a league and try it out. It is a great way to exercise, meet new people and build friendships and comradery.
