Q&A with Lindsay Eastwood

This weekend features the PHF All-Star Showcase! Buffalo will host the best players from across the Premier Hockey Federation on Saturday, January 29. Amongst this amazing talent is Lindsay Eastwood, who you might remember us mentioning is a great friend of CARHA Hockey.

Year 2 with the Toronto Six, All-Star selection, and nominee in her hometown for Face Magazine Ottawa - Athlete of the Year (vote until January 31!) are a couple of things we caught up with Lindsay about. Always a pleasure to chat with Lindsay, we are so proud of her accomplishments on and off the ice!

STICKS TOGETHER UPDATE
Equipment Drive Happening Now in Ottawa Area

Sarah Thompson started her project, Sticks Together, to bring the sport of hockey to underprivileged communities around the world. In May of 2022, she will be bringing recycled hockey sticks and street hockey equipment to the children in Recoleta, Argentina.

To support, you can visit any Play It Again Sports location in Ottawa (Orleans, Kanata, Nepean) during the month of January to donate any hockey sticks and other sporting equipment you no longer use. She has also set up a Go Fund Me to support the project.

Check it out!
Good luck to all our athletes competing in Beijing!

GETTING WOMEN OFF THE SIDELINES
The call for more representation in leadership roles

Women have been underrepresented in leadership roles, but this is not due to a lack of qualifications. We're seeing an evolution for women and sport but still have a long road ahead for gender equity. One day we will no longer celebrate the 'firsts' and will remember those who paved the way for equal opportunity. While we've definitely missed more of these stories to share, here are some that have stood out recently in different professional leagues:
  • Emilie Castonguay was named the first female assistant general manager in Vancouver Canucks history. She is the second woman to hold the title in NHL history.
  • Rachel Balkovec was named the first female manager in affiliated professional baseball. She is taking over the Tampa Tarpons, the New York Yankees' low-A affiliate in the Florida State League.
  • In the WNBA, Becky Hammon was named head coach of the Los Vegas Aces.
  • Christine Sinclair was honoured with The Best FIFA Special Award, presented during FIFA’s annual awards ceremony, for her many years of excellence and her all-time goal-scoring record. 188 goals makes her the top international scorer among women and men.

ICYMI: LARGEST ONE-TIME INDEPENDENT INVESTMENT
Women's professional hockey get a huge boost

This is a game-changer from the Premier Hockey Federation! Hard to believe that only about a year ago the salary cap was sitting around $150,000 per team. Making moves in the right direction for a sustainable league.

Highlights include:
  •  $750,000 salary cap (150% more than it currently is)
  •  Montreal is getting a team
  •  Player experience enhancements (like full health-care benefits)
