Can you share some history of the Toronto Gay Hockey Association and how it came together?
Founded in 1994, the TGHA began with a group of like-minded individuals who came together to play hockey in a friendly environment free of the aggressiveness typical of other leagues. That first group has since transformed and grown into the largest association of its kind in the world!
The TGHA is a not-for-profit organization run entirely by volunteers; it offers friendship and camaraderie in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. The league is fun but competitive in a way that promotes the growth of leadership, coaching, and playing skills. In addition, the association organizes and coordinates social events throughout the season.
What impact has the league had for players and for the community?
We’ve grown to be one of the worlds largest gay hockey leagues! Were proud of to facilitate the love of hockey and safe place for those within the LGBTQ2S+ community!
Pride Toronto festivities are finally returning in person this year and we hear that TGHA is involved in the parade. What plans do you have for your participation and are there any other activities you are looking forward to?
We’ve put together a very loud, very colorful pride parade float for this years parade! This time is also the start of a new season for our hockey league with registration for our new season opening June 20th and July 1st to the general public!
When is the parade for those of us in the area who want to come and check it out?
June 26th at 2:00! The parade begins at Bloor Street E and will make its way down Yonge St to Dundas St Toronto!
Pride Month is a time of celebration but Pride is more than a single month. How can we support a more inclusive hockey culture and be allies year-round?
Support comes in all shapes and sizes but sharing the positive messages of our community do wonders!
