A recent women’s hockey tournament achieved remarkable success, raising a substantial amount for a local charity.
Held from November 8 to 10, the 10th annual Udder Tournament took place at the Caledon East Community Complex. This event is hosted every year in honor of Donna de Boer, a founding member of the Caledon Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), which is a proud member of CARHA Hockey. de Boer is remembered for her significant contributions to both the league and the broader Caledon community.
A lifelong dairy farmer, de Boer was a beloved friend and teammate to many in Caledon. Her profession inspired the tournament’s cow theme.
This year, the Udder Tournament raised over $53,000 for Bethell Hospice, a local non-profit organization that offers free hospice palliative care and community programs. This year’s fundraising exceeded last year’s impressive total of over $50,000.
In addition to its charitable efforts, the tournament is also known for its scholarship awards. This year, three scholarships were presented to female athletes pursuing post-secondary education.
The tournament, which consistently attracts 30 teams, reached full capacity across eight divisions. Over the course of the three-day event, players of all skill levels participated in games, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
The Udder Tournament upholds the positive values that de Boer embodied, including good sportsmanship, kindness, respect for others, and cooperation both on and off the ice.
A dedicated group of 73 volunteers helped ensure the success of the tournament, as organizing an event of this size is no small task.
Organizers expressed their satisfaction with this year’s event and are already looking forward to next year’s tournament.
