CARHA Hockey invites the hockey community to join forces during Earth Hour (Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 pm your local time) and explore ways to incorporate sustainable practices into their ice time. Earth Hour is a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to switch off non-essential lights and appliances for one hour. It serves as a symbol of our commitment to the planet and as a reminder of the collective power we have to make a positive impact. It also raises awareness about the need for urgent climate change action.
As members of the hockey community, we have a unique opportunity to encourage sustainable practices during Earth Hour. We believe in the power of collective action. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Carpooling to the Rink:Â Encourage teammates and parents to carpool, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation to and from the rink.Â
- Embrace Reusable Water Bottles:Â Instead of single-use plastic bottles, bring reusable water bottles to stay hydrated during practices and games. This switch can significantly reduce plastic waste.Â
- Power down at the Arena:Â Inquire whether your arena plans to participate in Earth Hour by shutting down non-essential lights and power during that time. If not, suggest the idea and help raise awareness about the importance of energy conservation.Â
- Donate Used Equipment:Â Consider donating your used hockey equipment to local organizations or programs that provide access to the sport. This not only promotes sustainability but also helps others enjoy the game.Â
- Highlight Earth Hour on Ice:Â Utilize your ice time during Earth Hour to raise awareness about the event. Create an educational moment or a special drill to emphasize the importance of acting for the planet.Â
- Community Clean-up:Â Organize a community quick clean-up event in collaboration with your team. Pick up litter, cans, bottles etc. and make a positive impact on the local environment.Â
- Reusable Mugs for Pre-Game Coffee: Encourage team members, coaches, and parents to bring their own reusable mugs for pre-game coffee or hot beverages. Â
Now we challenge you come up with your own creative ideas to make Earth Hour an impactful event your hockey community! Share your ideas and experiences with us at community@carhahockey.ca. Your idea could be featured and inspire others to act.
