Since the start of CARHA Hockey, formerly known as COHA (Canadian Oldtimers Hockey Association), there has been much change, but throughout the last 49 years, the one constant is that CARHA Hockey continues to strive to offer the best hockey services and programs for its members.   

CARHA Hockey has grown and adapted with innovative programs and services since its start in 1974. Initially, the association focused on organizing and supporting provincial and major sanctioned tournaments, involved in upwards of 25 tournaments per year. On-ice insurance was a factor in the business, but tournaments drove everyday operations. COHA rebranded to the Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association (CARHA Hockey) in the 1990s, reflecting the evolving sports scene, and as membership expanded from players aged 35 and older, to players 19 and older. This ensured all adult recreational players had access insurance coverage, and services and programs.

Today the mission of CARHA Hockey is to be the dedicated resource and service provider for Recreation Hockey communities in Canada by offering affordable, comprehensive insurance coverage, and valuable benefits to our members and enhance the experience of those involved in the game of hockey.  

Technology advancement, along with membership and player needs, directed the strong shift in operations beginning in the early 2000s. New benefit opportunities became accessible to enhance the player experience, including team website development and a newsletter.  Today, innovative online capabilities continue to streamline processes and our services to help better assist our members.

In 2007, CARHA’s sister company, iPlay Hockey, was established to facilitate the needs of coaches, camp instructors, organizers, and players across Canada.  iPlay Hockey strives to maintain a community connection by providing essential hockey resources, unique content, beneficial services, and promotions to those who are empowered to teach the game and to support the ones who love to play.

In recent years, the growth of the women’s game was remarkable, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of hockey within CARHA Hockey. The increasing participation of women in our programs has been a testament to the dedication and passion of female athletes across Canada. As one of the fastest-growing demographics within CARHA Hockey, the rise of women’s hockey underscores the importance of providing inclusive and accessible opportunities for players of all backgrounds and skill levels. We are proud to be at the forefront of fostering the growth and development of women’s hockey, and we remain committed to continuing our efforts to support and empower female athletes in their pursuit of the game they love.

The power of sport and recreation became increasingly apparent over the pandemic in 2020. While hockey paused, CARHA Hockey did not. The Next Stride was launched as a dedicated community-driven platform to connect with a larger audience. The Listening Booth was also launched and offers a direct connection with municipalities in a personal way to actively listen, learn about their wants, needs, challenges, and successes recreationally, and explore opportunities for collaboration. Out of these sessions came the launch of two annual campaigns, the ODR (Outdoor Rink Contest) and Game Changers.  The ODR celebrates our outdoor rinks and the individuals that keep them active in our communities. Game Changers highlights the people and programs that are paving the way for advancing gender equity in recreation and sport through action and allyship. 

In 2023, OMNI Hockey, a sister company of CARHA Hockey, was launched with a simple purpose: HOCKEY FOR ALL!  As the name implies, “Hockey for All” is about expanding the reach of the game. This takes the collective effort of those who already participate in the sport to bring it to more individuals and communities.  With over 30 years of experience, the managing team at OMNI Hockey had an idea to create a unique hockey marketplace where member contributions and experiences would influence the content, program resources and offerings provided. We aim to inspire and connect with all individuals and communities to foster growth and progressive change in the sport of hockey by focusing on collaborative resources and content.

CARHA Hockey strives to be a dedicated resource and service provider to Canada’s adult recreational hockey community and will continue to provide programs that benefit our members.
